Trump’s proposal of a 50-year mortgage just shows how out of touch he is with the suffering of average Americans struggling to afford groceries and health care and for whom home ownership is completely out of reach. A loan that saddles the buyer with hundreds of thousands of dollars of extra interest with very little equity over five decades is essentially renting for life. A MAGA supporter defending this idiotic “solution” said to me, “Well, they should just pay more a month so they can pay it off early.” My response (obviously), “If they could pay extra, they wouldn’t need a 50-year mortgage in the first place!”
