Dick Cheney, for all of his faults, put country over party when it mattered
Love him or hate him (and plenty of people hated him), Dick Cheney — former Vice President under George W. Bush from 2001-2009, Defense Secretary (before it was called Secretary of War, how quaint!) under the first Bush and Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford — was no supporter of Donald Trump and had been ostracized by the MAGA crowd. As his daughter, Liz, summed him up, “I want people to remember that my father chose country over party.” He was critical of Donald Trump and endorsed Kamala Harris in 2024. Back in 2004, as staff cartoonist for The Augusta Chronicle, (also, how quaint!) I wanted to do something special for Election Day, so I asked for a full-page to draw a cartoon that captured the entire campaign:
Here’s another Cheney cartoon from 2004 poking fun at the stark differences between Cheney, who was no GQ model, and his opponent, Democratic VP candidate and pretty boy, John Edwards:
Dick Cheney wasn’t perfect, but he was nothing compared to the bunch currently inhabiting what’s left of the crumbling White House and he ultimately came down on the right side of history with his endorsement of Harris. Too bad the GOP doesn’t have more like him.
